ESFC 4 - 2 Futbolistas FC

Playing against the runaway leader of the division and having suffered a 6 - 1 demolition in the earlier encounter, observers were expecting ESFC to suffer another thrashing from Futbolistas FC. Furthermore, Futbolistas FC were on a 6 games unbeaten run while ESFC, who were beaten 3 – 0 in their previous game went into this game as underdogs.

Without any proper game plan in hand, Jason Ang brought the team together for a prep talk and did a long-forgotten team cheer before the start.

The main tactical trait apparent in the first half was ESFC’s aggressive, narrow pressing high up the pitch. The compactness of the midfield and the higher line held by the impressive duo of Adib and Zhong meant that the middle third was crowded and Futbolistas struggled to get any foothold throughout the match.

There were some concerns though. Futbolistas made full use of their set piece opportunities and ESFC were fortunate that the early attempts by their star man, no. 8, hit the cross bar and over a couple of times.

Most of ESFC’s work on offense came on semi-counter and full-blown counter attacks with the intelligent movements of Sebas and Ashley causing headaches for Futbolistas. Indeed, the quick succession of goals came from the duo. By then, Futbolistas had lost their focus and their defender was sent off after receiving 2 yellows within five minutes.

At half-time, Futbolistas reorganized the team with their no. 8 playing the quarter-back role and this gave them a better base to build from and as ESFC continued to try and press, it meant that ESFC allowed Futbolistas to build or pushed players forward, creating more space for them to work in. However, the calming presence of Adib and Zhong managed to repel any penetrations from Futbolistas. It was to their credit that ESFC conceded only through the exquisite freekicks from no. 8 and not from open play.

Quick counter-attacking moves from either flanks brought the final two goals as curlers from Jason Ang and Boon just needed Sebas and Wx to make contact with the ball.

Men-of-the-Match should be awarded to Adib and Zhong for their awesome defending. Futbolistas could not hit them on the deck or through aerial bombardment. We could be witnessing the birth of a long-term partnership (not homosexual, we hope) here….

ESPZEN Official Incident Report and Conclusion - Everyday Sunday FC vs Pakiyoko FC - 20 Nov 2011

Everyday Sunday FC Report

Report 1

This email is to report on a off the ball incident which could have resulted in a serious injury to a player in Everyday Sunday FC (ESFC). This incident happened in the match against Pakiyoko FC (PFC) on 20/11/11 at 11am in Yusof Ishak Secondary School.

In the 85th minute, the player(myself, no. 11) from ESFC attempted to tackle the ball away from Iskandar Abdullah(no. 12) of PFC. Unfortunately, the attempt was mistimed and hence resulted in a clash with Iskandar Abdullah(no. 12) of PFC.

While the player(myself, no. 11) from ESFC was on the ground, Iskandar Abdullah(no. 12) of PFC retaliated by swinging his right foot towards the face of the ESFC player. His foot hit the shoulder and chest of the ESFC player and, fortunately, missed the face by a few inches.

Iskandar Abdullah(no. 12) was going to attempt another swing at the downed player when another player from ESFC, Ethan Loo(no. 25), came in to push the PFC player away from creating more damages.

The downed player(myself, no. 11) from ESFC was given a yellow card and the referee red-carded both Iskandar Abdullah(no. 12) and Ethan Loo(no. 25). It is unfortunate for Ethan Loo(no. 25) of ESFC to be red-carded despite his attempts to prevent the PFC player from hitting the downed player(myself, no. 11). However, ESFC will not appeal the referee's decision to send him off.

Referee had mentioned that he would put the incident in an official report to ESPZEN.

It is to be noted that Iskandar Abdullah(no. 12) of PFC had the direct intention to cause serious injury to the player(myself, no. 11) in retaliation despite suffering from a mistimed tackle. It is fortunate that no serious injury occurred but we hope that the player will be prevented from causing serious injury to others in the season ahead. The PFC team should also have acted to prevent such volatile players from ruining the good spirits of the game.

No, it was only the opponent player involved who engaged in the violent act.

Ethan Loo(no. 25) was the nearest player to the scene and he acted the quickest to push Iskandar Abdullah(no. 12) of PFC away before he attempted to commit the violent act a second time.

Ethan Loo(no. 25) of Everyday Sunday FC. His only act of violence was to stop Iskandar Abdullah(no. 12) of PFC by pushing him away from another attempt to kick a downed player. NO punch was thrown from Ethan Loo.

There was no intention from the ESFC players to commit any form of violence and the only motivation was to make sure the downed player was not attacked the second time. Retaliation was never in the minds of ESFC. Protection was.

Pakiyoko FC Report

I refer to the earlier email to our club on the incident which happened on the 20th Nov 2011, 11.00 am at Yusof Ishak Secondary School, a match between our club, Pakiyoko FC, VS Everyday Sunday FC.

First and foremost, as the captain of Pakiyoko FC, I would like to apologize for the unfortunate event. In no way my managers, nor I, condone the retaliation of my player, Iskandar Abdullah (12). I will make sure he will be put to task for his outburst, we will definitely enforce disciplinary actions (match ban) on him after the whole matter is settled (with ESPZEN).

On the whole, the game went on like any other games. By now, you would have learnt that, Iskandar had scored three goals making the game pretty much ours.

As a player, he is blessed with blistering speed and wonderful dribbling skills. He loves to take players on and naturally that would put a big target on his back, like all other games, this one was no different. He was brought down almost every time he took the opponent’s defense on.

About five minutes towards the end, Iskandar broke free at the bylines (left) and just as he made it past the opponents’ half, Jason Ang (11) of Everyday Sunday FC, made a two-footed tackle on Iskandar from behind.

Immediately after Iskandar was brought down, he got up and in the spur of the moment, kicked Jason Ang on his chest, the only reason it landed there was Jason Ang was still in a sitting position. Again, it was unacceptable what Iskandar did, but that was more of a build up of the tackles he has taken more than anything else.

As a result, there was a reaction from the opponent’s side, Ethen Loo (25) of Everyday Sunday FC, ran towards Iskandar who was making his way out of the pitch, in a confrontational manner with his hands raised. Fortunately, players from both sides stopped him. Everyone from both teams did not want the matter to escalate and the aftermath ended abruptly with no assaults what so ever. Ethen Loo was also sent off for his actions.

The Referee had marshaled the game well throughout and handled the “incident” well. The only doubtful call the referee has made (in my opinion) was probably giving Jason Ang a yellow for a red card tackle.

I am sure that we have maintained a good reputation in our years of participation in ESPZEN. This was our only sending off as far as I can remember. If our good opponents think that we have been disrespectful towards them, I apologize and I would like to know in what sense. Soccer after all, is a contact sport. We can’t win them all, albeit, not everyday is Sunday (no pun intended).

If there is anything disrespectful, it’s that they have been very brief in their Match Report and two faced about the whole thing. After the match, we shook hands, and now they turn around and write in for a violent conduct? We have been straight about the whole thing throughout, and even put it up like it is. Iskandar deserved a red card for his action, which he did.

With all that said, we are a team who leaves everything on the pitch. Never had any match turned personal. I will assist in whatever ways possible and hope that no further actions will be taken against Pakiyoko FC as a team, nor Iskandar as a player.

Referee Report

With regards to the game between Parkiyoko and Everyday Sunday, 11am at Yusof Ishak Sec School.

On 33 mins, Parkiyoko's Iskandar Abdullah approach a high ball but was foul by Jason Ang (I think so base on the player's list picture). Perhaps due to the reckless challenge, Iskandar Abdullah was furious with the mistimed tackle and launch a flying kick which landed on Jason's chest. At this point of time, Jason's team mate Ethan Loo rush towards Iskandar with both hand pushing him on his chest backward with excessive force.

Both team control the player and took couple of minutes to calm down.

Both Iskandar (violent conduct) and Ethan (Man Handling) was caution with red card and send off. Jason was caution with a yellow card for the reckless/mistime tackle on Iskandar.
Thereafter, the game commence and ended in full 80 mins with 2 minutes added time.

I hope the above information help the organiser and please contact me if you need further verification.

ESPZEN COMMENTS

ESPZEN has neither cameras nor video evidence to be able comment on the remarks made by any team manager in such incident reports and generally speaking teams may cite off the ball incidents that may or may not have occurred. If the referee in charge did not see an off the ball incident then equally, the referee cannot comment and ESPZEN can take no further action regarding citations by team managers not witnessed by the referee.

If ESPZEN was to react to every off the ball incident based on a team manager hearsay then our leagues would become impossible to manage. As such, ESPZEN base all incident report conclusions on the evidence of both teams and where facts may be distorted or ambiguous between two reports, we rely on the report of the referee as the neutral party and furthermore the referee is the entrusted official of the ESPZEN league.

ESPZEN is very disappointed to learn of the said unfortunate incident, incidents such as the above does not provide a good image & support the objectives of the ESPZEN league to its audience and third parties.

Unfortunate occurrences such as this can jeopardize ESPZEN relationship with pitch providers. If the pitches are withdrawn from ESPZEN booking, this would then lead to us having to adopt 3rd rate pitches for our leagues which would signal the start of the end for our company. We will not let any player nor team destroy our relationship.

A referees role on the field of play is very difficult being the only official present, both team managers should always control their players and let the referee deal with certain incidents on the pitch at all times

ESPZEN has a clearly defined policy for Off the Ball Violence

Off The Ball Violent Conduct

OTB1. Should a player or players from a team be “red carded” for an act of violence (excluding the initial challenge for the ball – see OTB2) with the direct intention to cause serious injury (regardless of whether the player was the initial aggressor or not) the player will be suspended for a number of games (which ESPZEN will decide depending on the incident). The team may also be warned regarding the behaviour of their players on the field of play and in addition the team will also be deducted one league point.

OTB2. Note: the initial challenge for the ball is defined as two or more players competing for the ball. This is excluded from OTB1 as the referee will manage this situation on the field of play however should other incidents occur as a direct consequence of this incident or other off the ball incidents, these will be captured by the above ruling. Should a referee however feel there was serious intent from the initial challenge this can be highlighted to ESPZEN by the referee concerned only.

OTB3. Not more than one league point will be deducted from a team if it’s their first offence in a given season, however teams with repeat offenders may be deducted further points.

OTB4. An Off The Ball Violent Incident report must be submitted by email by one of the teams concerned in the game within 48hrs to ESPZEN. Incident reports submitted after 48hrs will be kept on file however no league point deduction will take, however ESPZEN will still (if confirmed by the referee) take action against the players involved in the incident. The incident report should only cite those players who were red carded by the referee.

The ruling is in place to ensure team managers do not select volatile players who could cause their team to lose vital league points or team managers substitute hot tempered players off the pitch when there is a chance a game is heating up. ESPZEN believe that peer pressure from within a team is the “most effective” control to ensure all games are played in the right spirit.

ESPZEN CONCLUDES

Ø Ishkandar Abdullah of Pakiyoko FC is given a 3 league match suspension effective immediately for “Off The Ball Violent Conduct” as per Rule OTB 1.

Ø Pakiyoko FC are deducted 1 league point for the “Off The Ball Violent Conduct” by Ishkandar Abdullah as per Rule OTB 1.

Ø Ethan Loo of Everyday Sunday FC is given a 2 league match suspension effective immediately, as he should not have got involved in the incident, which potentially could then have lead to a free for all. The referee had the situation under control and would have dismissed Iskandar for his actions.

ESPZEN acknowledges the intention of Pakiyoko FC’s to deal with this incident internally after the conclusion of this incident report, which ESPZEN applauds and we trust this is indeed an isolated incident and out of character of the player.

The purpose of ESPZEN Leagues is to provide a professional, competitive, and fun platform in which to enjoy our favourite sport. The threat of physical violence or overly excessive verbal abuse between players or players and officials will NOT be tolerated under any circumstance in ESPZEN nor in the game of football.

ESPZEN has a history of removing teams whose behavior is not sporting on a regular basis. ESPZEN sincerely hopes that Pakiyoko FC will not let such a situation arise again in future and will try to salvage a positive outcome from the above situation.

Please use this as a reminder to all their players to not let the actions of an individual impact the teams overall performance and that such behaviour will NOT be tolerated in ESPZEN leagues.

There is no right of appeal to the findings above and the issue is now considered closed.

ESFC lost in numbers but not in spirit. Things could have been better but at the end of the day, a lack of subs and a hot afternoon sun deprived ESFC from executing a consistent assault to the PFC backline.

MOTM Yenhao never gave up and was relentless in his one-man mission to find a breakthrough.

PFC might have won the match but they must also learn to respect their opponents and help to maintain a better environment in which the game can take place. Some of the actions by the PFC players were hugely disrespectful and should not be condoned.

Winless in two! A wasteful game against Poseur United follows our absolute capitulation after halftime against Futbolistas FC. Cue the crisis talk, my friends.

I feel that the core of the matter lies in the players thinking too much instead of simply ‘acting’ in the moment. Right now, we’re eleven players in a slump that are trying to make the ‘right pass’ instead of the smart one. We’re forcing the issue instead of letting our more creative forces in the squad embrace their abilities. The problem isn’t creating chances, or finishing, or defending poorly. It’s that we’re not in tune as a side, and not playing as a unit. Instead we have a hodgepodge of guys roaming around trying to do it all by themselves, or forcing passes into channels where they expect players to be, or taking ill-advised shots instead of playing an extra pass to an open man.

We may be uncertain of our top position in the league. But nothing, I mean NOTHING has been decided yet. The naysayers and doom-and-gloom contingent need to just relax and realize that there’s a ton of miles left to go. We’ve seen in years past how easy it is for everything to change shape- and with the way things are going this year with teams getting slaughtered one week and then firing the bullets the next, who’s to say we can’t reverse the script? Hell, if Arsenal were able to weather the storm of their dismal start to the season, and are now in fine form, surely we can and will be too. We absolutely will be. People, it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when.

ESFC 1 - 6 Futbolistas FC

Respect and football go in tandem and today, like what Futbolistas FC would taunt, "Everyday is not Sunday." Indeed, they were right. ESFC showed too much respect to Futbolistas FC and allowed them to dictate the play. I’m not going to go into too much detail about the match proceedings, because I’m pretty sure most of you caught the gist of what happened. Futbolistas FC physically, mentally, emotionally and footbally outplayed us from beginning to end. We were, for the most part, a nervous wreck for the 90 minutes.

We had been playing pretty well and we needed a loss. This SHOULD be the nadir for ESFC. The lowest point. Now, the bigger test will be our REACTION to the loss. No more dropping of points and no more giving up midway through the game. We're too good for that. Keep the faith, lads.

Finally, this has been a very traumatizing result and day for us, so if I may make a little suggestion, it’s that you all do something relaxing for the rest of the day, after reading this. Go out for a walk, if you’re not tired. Get some beers or smoke some weeds. If you have gf(s), go ~~play~~ out with them. Listen to Lady Gaga, or Justin Bieber, or Pitbull. Watch some South Park. And most of all, Have a good Sunday!

Arguably the biggest test of the season awaits ESFC, much like the Manchester derby that is to happen on the same day. Champions of Div 9 v Champions of Div 11. The top two teams in the current division. Despite losing once this season, Futbolistas FC have been a model of consistency for the most part of the year. Considering the manner that they had destroyed other teams (71 goals scored and 9 conceded only) in the previous season and signs are already present this season that they have carried forward their form. ESFC are under no illusion of the mammoth task that awaits them come kickoff time and everyone must turn up to show their mettle in this potentially tricky tie.

ESFC 8 - 4 InnerCircle FC

So... it was the beginning of a huge run of consecutive games against the other title contenders in InnerCircle FC, Futbolistas FC and Poseur FC. Like what Sir Alex Ferguson would say, "It's the squeaky bum time."

ESFC turned up with what could be seen as the most powerful squad ever in their four years history. Well, except for the goalie position as Ah Liang suffered an unfortunate injury and everybody's finger crossed that he would be available for the next crunch match. However, some late arrivals meant that the team could not start the strongest starting XI considering the players available. Zifu started (volunteered) in goal with Zhong and Uda continuing their central defense partnership as Weilin and Eugene reprised their fullback roles. Ashley and Jason Ang were partnered in central midfield with the wings covered by Boon and St. Kenneth and Kim were the strikers. Adib, Reyro, Peng and Sebas were on the bench.

The match started off with each team trying to gain an early advantage. ESFC started to gain possession slowly over the first 5 minutes and it was all about pressure from there on. InnerCircle were trying to soak up the pressure, putting 8 players around the penalty area and hitting on the counter with their flamboyant striker. It would take a set piece in the 10th minute to break down InnerCircle's resistance as Boon floated in a ball to the far post from a corner kick that was headed in by Uda for his first goal for the club.

Peng came in for Kim to make his league debut and played the support striker position. It didn't take long for him to leave his mark as he just had to stick the ball into the back of the net from an inch perfect cross from Boon down the flank in the 40th minute.

HT and ESFC stuck with the same players after having made some changes during the first half with Adib playing right-back, Reyro playing striker, ST playing left-back and Sebas playing the right wing.

Another set piece - this time from Jason Ang - found Adib lurking in the penalty area and he duly tapped in from close range. InnerCircle hit one back immediately as the defense went to sleep and allowed the flamboyant striker time and space in the penalty area to score. A short corner taken fast caught InnerCircle by surprise and Peng took his time before laying a beautiful low cross for Adib, who fired a thumping shot from close range. Again, InnerCircle hit back almost immediately as a lapse in concentration allowed the InnerCircle striker to send the ball into the bottom corner.

Peng decided to take matter into his own hands - or rather legs in this case - and upon receiving the ball in ESFC's own half, launched a mazy run that could not be stopped by InnerCircle. From 30 yards out, the elegant forward launched an unstoppable drive to the top corner that even the best keeper could not be able to save.

Well, ESFC thought that could have destroyed InnerCircle's confidence but to their credit, they carried on fighting and scored from the kick-off immediately, having spotted Zifu and the rest of the team still celebrating Peng's goal.

Now, ESFC were in destroy mode and the game opened up even further as InnerCircle tried to capitalize on the former's complacency. In the 75th minute, Peng turned provider as an exquisite pass found Boon from the edge of the box but he still had much to do with the last defender breathing down his neck . A sharp turn left the defender for dead and Boon duly sent the ball beyond the reach of the goalie and into the net.

A dummy run made by Weilin down the right flank caught InnerCircle by surprise and they stopped play, thinking that the teleporter was offside. Well, they're right! But the teleporter wasn't in the play when the ball was released to his direction. In fact, he teleported back almost immediately while Kenneth took the ball down the flank and scored from close range. An intelligent play indeed! InnerCircle's resurgence ended but ESFC had to put the nails in the coffin and Kenneth unselfishly passed the ball to Sebas to score from close range in the final kick of the game.

A high scoring game that the spectators and neutrals would be proud of. It was another positive team effort as ESFC controlled large periods of the game and were clinical in front of goal. But then it was also another classic ESFC: Falling asleep after scoring goals and letting the opponents had a few back as the defense did allow them a bit more space in the final ESFC third than they should have. Nonetheless, it was a good vintage performance from ESFC and it was fascinating to see the new midfield three in Ashley, Jason Ang and Peng combining well and pulling strings from the center. And of course, there are not enough superlatives to describe Peng as he was simply unstoppable on the attack and the team have truly missed his presence. Special mention also for Zifu for his selflessness in doing the easiest job in ESFC and we sincerely hope that we do not require his service any time soon. In other words, we hope Ah Liang recovers as soon as possible. :)

Finally, big games like that are what the competitive nature in us crave for. And if you guys need more psyching up, scouts from Futbolistas FC were present to watch us play and next week's game promises to be one of the most important matches in our short history.

ESFC 5 - 2 Subbuteo FC

ESFC welcomed back British boy Eugene with a spirited performance against a fired up Subbuteo FC, who were looking for their first points of the season. Under the intense heat in coach Kumar’s sacred ground, ESFC fielded an usual 4-4-1-1 formation with Simon in goal, Wei Lin and Eugene in their familiar full backs roles, Lionel and Zhong lined up for what was another impressive defensive quartet. Sinting and Yenhao took to the wings with Adib and Jason Ang in the centre of the park. Ashley, the attacking mid, supported man of the moment, Sebas, who played as striker. Weiming, Zifu and new boy Reyro made up the thinning bench.

Both teams got on to a decent start as the ball was moved all over the field. ESFC squandered some good chances to take the lead, most notably the miss by Adib in front of goal, which if Guo Xing was there, would have been consoled by his shocking miss in the last game out. It was not in the script when Subbuteo FC drew first blood. Their impressive striker deceived a run to “beat” the offside trap, but I say it rather deceived the referee into playing him on. With only the ever so reliable Simon to beat, he made no mistakes and slotted home. 0-1 to Subbuteo FC.

ESFC were not to be undone by and soon enough, 2.5 men Yenhao, despite the arduous – by our standards – Nike 10km run he went for earlier in the morning, marauded down the right flank and sent a low cross in which Sebas gladly tucked away into goal. That equalizer gave ESFC the impetus to grab a second.

British Boy Eugene brought the ball over the half way line and with his cultured left foot, delivered a curving cross which beat everyone but Sebas. He met the ball with his head and sent a looping ball over the goalkeeper, and into an empty net. Brilliant!

The tempo of the game was lifted and both sides had some good exchanges. Subbuteo FC’s right midfield was outstanding with his incisive left foot which fooled the defense time and time again. So much so, Zhong was humiliated once and almost brought him down with a tug at the winger shirt in the penalty box.

There was to be another goal before half time when Adib redeemed his amazing miss earlier on. He won the ball, the warrior style, in midfield and brought the ball goal wards, leaving the hapless defense behind. Slotting it past the goalie, Adib celebrated his second goal in as many as two games.

Half time: ESFC 3 – 1 Subbuteo FC

ESFC shuffled the lineup for second half, with Reyro playing behind Sebas, Ashley dropping down to centre mid, Weiming on the right and Zifu replacing Eugene as left full back.

From the outset, Subbuteo FC showed their hunger with high pressure and raised the intensity of the game. ESFC was shell shocked and it was only a matter of time when Subbuteo FC was to score their second. Zhong failed to clear a simple header from a throw in, and the impressive striker latched on to the loose ball and got his second goal when he slammed it in between Simon’s legs.

Subbuteo FC could have gotten the equalizer soon when they managed to escape ESFC backline, but unfortunately the goal bar denied them. On occasions, ESFC defense had to throw their body at the ball to deny Subbuteo FC from scoring. Wei Lin, in particular, put up an outstanding performance for which any international defenders would have been proud of.

ESFC failed to control the game and a miracle was needed to change the flow of it. That moment arrived when a freekick was awarded for ESFC about 35metres away from goal. Jason Ang stood in front of the ball but Reyro approached him and shoved him aside to take the free kick, beaming with confidence. Reyro unleashed a powerful drive towards goal which appeared to be going out but at the last moment, the ball dipped, hit the top right corner and into the net. Stunning! It was an out-of –this-world shot which would have shamed any other free kick takers around, who thinks they had the most beautiful shot ever. What a way to mark his debut!

That goal dampened Subbuteo and the game was more balanced at this stage.

Sebas completed his hat trick when he was sent through into the opponent’s half by Zhong. With only the goalie to beat, Sebas rounded him, took the ball to the by line before finding the navigation to goal. He got the match ball and also duly deserved the MOTM.

Final score: ESFC 5 - 2 Subbuteo FC. ESFC maintained their winning streak and it was a deserving victory even though Subbuteo FC put up a good challenge. However, it remains to be seen whether ESFC have all it takes as they prepare to face stiffer oppositions in the coming weeks.

ESFC 2 - 0 Pakiyoko FC

Playing against a Pakiyoko FC side that were eager to arrest their recent dismay form, ESFC had to step up their game by a few notches. A switch in formation to 4-4-1-1 saw Weilin, Uda, Zhong and Zifu at the back, a central midfield pairing of Adib and Jason Ang that were flanked by league debutant St and Gx. Boon played the trequartista role with Kim up top.

Pakiyoko FC started the game and showed their intention immediately to take advantage of the huge pitch at Meridian JC with an astute passing game. However, a strong line-up with a high tempo pressing game ensured that Pakiyoko FC couldn't penetrate through the midfield and had to resort to some long distance shots that did not bother the goalie. The impressive central defense pairing of Uda and Zhong ensured Simon hardly touch the ball in the game. In fact, the only times Simon did touch the ball were when he had to pick the ball up as it went out of play from the potshots of Pakiyoko FC.

However, ESFC also lacked the final cutting edge despite having the majority of the possession. Kim nearly drew first blood as he failed to connect (i.e. team interpreted it as no effort) from St's cross-cum-shot from the left after a good through ball from Boon. St, himself, could have scored from outside the box as his volley went inches off the top corner. An impressive low cross from Gx on the right found St and the latter laid the ball onto Boon's path. Unfortunately, Boon's shot was saved by the goalie. A poor clearance from Pakiyoko FC allowed Zhong to execute a volley which went agonizing close.

Half-time and the team was encouraged to keep probing and Gx was switched to be the striker with Weimin coming in on the left. Immediately, this paid dividends as a couple of exquisite passing early in the 2nd half released Adib who provided the cross for Gx to tap-in. A few minutes later, Adib found himself outside the edge of the box and released a wondrous shot that beat the goalie. And it ended that way as ESFC failed to put off some clear-cut chances.

In general, this was a good team display as both the midfield and defense were collective in ensuing that there was no space for the opposition to exploit. As usual, there were some standout performers - The back line was superb but Uda was, again, mostly excellent and particularly effective when heading clear. Jason Ang was the midfield commando commander, covering ground up and down the pitch and breaking up play from open to close. And the return of the flying wingers, Gx and St, meant that Pakiyoko FC should be having some aching bodies now. Most impressive was Adib whose industrious display was capped by an impossible shot that will have a strong case for the goal of the season. He duly deserved the MOTM.

ESFC will be up against a wounded Pakiyoko side which had lost their last two games and will be even more determined to win their next. Recent records have shown Pakiyoko FC to be slow starters but their losses should not be taken as a sign of their weakness.

I watched them last week and I was very impressed. They didn't let their heads down despite being dominated by Futbolistas FC. Complacency is our strongest enemy. It's heady heights for us now, but we cannot get carried away because it is still early days.

ESFC 6 - 1 Arima Singapura FC

Apologies for the tardiness of this match report. We needed the dust to settle down first before writing this report or else....

Alright, lets skip the mess and go straight to the action for now. ESFC fielded an experimental XI, with a couple of new signings chosen straight for the firing line against a Arima Singapura FC side. Ah Liang resumed his role as the custodian with WL and Zifu the fullbacks, new Japanese import Captain Tsubasa or also formally known as Uda forming a strategic partnership with former captain Ethanol (he always says he's neutral). Another new signing, Ashley, was paired up with midfield commander Jason Ang and they were winged by WM and Zhong. Kim and Adib continued their partnership in front. Lionel and last season's hotshot Nathan were on the bench.

ESFC kicked off proceedings in fairly convincing fashion, with both clubs moving the ball forward into the attack. Arima appeared a touch sharper from the onset, but that soon settled, as nothing seemed to go through the impressive Uda who also inspired the rest of the team, particularly Ethan, to step up their game. ESFC showed verve going forward, with Kim, Adib, Zhong and Ashley all drifting into dangerous areas without a goal to show.

But, fortune favors the bold and ESFC were rewarded in the 25th minute when Ashley curled the ball over the wall from 30 yards to score on his debut. ESFC showed that they could also take the 'route one' method as a goal kick from Ah Liang was flicked by Adib into the path of Kim who slotted the ball neatly into the bottom right corner.

Half-time and 2-0 up, it looked to be a fantastic afternoon for ESFC. Or so it seemed, until Arima stepped up their game in the second half with more pace and persistence. Nathan was drafted in to replace Adib in the front line. But it was Zhong who helped to inspire the third goal for ESFC as he hassled the opposition defenders and caused them to score an own goal.

However, by this time, the ESFC defense was slowly overwhelmed and Arima were awarded a dubious penalty after Uda was judged to have fouled the opposition striker in the box. Ah Liang was unlucky not to repeat last week's heroic as he couldn't save the penalty despite putting a strong hand to it.

ESFC switched formation to 4-5-1 midway through the second half to help tide the team over. A counter-attack move down the left provided the pass for Nathan to slot the ball in from close range and that took the wind out of the sails for Arima. It was all about ESFC from that moment on.

Zhong, who was becoming the most influential player on the pitch, threaded a peach of a pass through the centre into the path of Kim and who duly unleashed a shot into the near post. By then, Arima had given up but ESFC had many 4v2 situations which they failed to take advantage of. Kim, in particular, took three chances to complete his hat-trick for the team and this came from a flick-on from Nathan in the box for the former to direct a half-volley into the net.

MOTM: Uda for his impressive debut and the way he marshaled the defense despite knowing a little bit of English. Football is indeed a universal language. Oh, and I like the way he shouted, 'Uda!' when he wanted to clear the ball. We always shout, 'MINE!' and this is something we should learn from Uda.

ESFC 4 - 3 AC United FC

A lovely weather and beautiful pitch meant that Sunday's match might have everything - Beauty and horror, passion and agony. Everyday Sunday FC started the game with a couple of changes to the line-up, giving stuntmen Jason Chew and Ethan their chance to correct the perception or misconception that they are the best defensive pairing in ESFC. Weilin and Zhong completed the back line and this promised to be a sturdy defense until.....

The centre midfield pairing of Jason Ang and Wx was winged by 2.5-man Yenhao and serial comedian Sebas. Kim and Adib led the front line. Boon and new signing, Weimin, were on the bench.

The game started and ESFC went down in the first min as the entire back line was still discussing on who was going to perform 'stunts' when the opponent struck. The striker got enough time and space in the penalty box to drill a unstoppable shot into the far corner.

Kim surprised everyone by equalizing through a uncharacteristically sweet free kick from 35 yards away. However, AC United scored another as the back line went AWOL again. ESFC, meanwhile, displayed a fighting spirit and there was great fluidity and incisive movement to go with a gaggle of gilt-edged chances which were not put away.

By then, SOS was called and Boon followed up with another curler - this time further away - that caught the keeper off guard at the far post. 2 - 2 ! (Boon, please mark the correct shooting boots ya!)

Half-time ended and ESFC started to dominate possession. A long free-kick from Wx into the box was met by Zhong as he executed a bicycle kick that took out the keeper instead of the ball. Yenhao took advantage of the confusion and showed his predatory instinct to score from inside the penalty box. By then, ESFC were in full flow and Sebas latched onto a through ball from Kim to send the ball into the back of the net. 4 - 2 !

However, dubious decisions from the Referee helped AC United to score their third goal but it was not the end of the day for both teams as a late tackle from Ethan gave AC United the chance to get an equalizer. But, a superb save by Simon gave the all-important three points and he, thoroughly, deserved the MOTM too!

ESFC 5 - 0 New Olympique Singapore FC

French toast for breakfast

After a successful campaign last season and some well-deserved break for Everyday Sunday FC, ESFC went into Sunday's match against New Olympique Singapore FC with the main objective of getting our groove back before the Playoffs next Sunday.

ESFC capitalized on a game that was never really in doubt with a strong opening half hour. Based solely on possession and the constant barrage of balls played through ESFC imposed its will on a fairly stagnant French side. Boon and Jason Ang came out of the locker room with their play making boots early. Yenhao's energy and burst was contagious in the attacking third, fueling the link-up and it was only natural that he unlocked NOS FC's negative stance with some clinical finishing. A foul on Adib in the penalty box allowed stand-in goalie Sebas to score from the penalty spot.

Had ESFC been more clinical in the first half, the game could have been double-digit. Nevertheless, NOS FC could not keep up with the high pressing game from ESFC and the goals came as the French side tired out.

2nd half began and Sebas returned to his striking role as regular goalie Simon rushed to the pitch after realizing that its Sunday and he got a football game! Clinical finishes from Sebas with a dubious cross-cum-shot allowed him to celebrate his second hat-trick for ESFC.

The game also saw the debut of new-signing Kenneth who sparked and looked to be the striker that ESFC have been searching for in the past few years. Kenneth scored but it was his all-round play that was lauded as he passed the ball wisely and made a couple of menacing runs to leave the impression that when he fully understands how the team plays, he will prove to be a huge success for the club.

MOTM: Sebas - Another hat-trick and there are already calls of "Sign him up!" from the fans...

Verdict: A high tempo game would also prove to be detrimental for ESFC as the once-fit boys tired out and lapses in focus at the ends of both halves meant that there were far too many stray passes and possession given away too much. It’s actually a bit heartbreaking. So... lets do something about it shall we?

End-of-season Review

Having been crowned Champions of ESPZEN Div 11, it is worthy to mention that the 2010/11 campaign was, if nothing else, an emotional roller coaster ride for all involved. Fears of slipping up to our opponents and losing our players to many reasons, have now been supplanted by a strong sense of optimism for the next campaign - that we can still do it if everyone is in it together. Before we look ahead at the season to come, though, it’s necessary to reflect on the season that was.

Pre-season friendlies do not normally show much as everyone returns lack-lusted but seven months of total no-football for the team meant that any game was as important as ever for the team to gel again. A heavy loss against rivals Y Homeless FC showed ESFC the need to get back to our usual level fast. And ESFC recovered to smash 8 goals past the next opponents, albeit they were considerably weaker than the previous ones but nevertheless, it was still a morale boasting victory. The next four games would see the groove slowly returning to the team as ESFC won them all with class and quality.

However, pre-season and competitive games are a different matter all together as the team experienced a narrow loss against eventual runner-up Kebun Baru United. The loss startled the team but ESFC recovered from the defeat and saw their challenge for the title going from strength to strength in quite magnificent fashion.

Many have voted Adib's goal against Team Saintsensational as the goal of the season when he unleashed a sublime half volley which went over the keeper's flailing hands and into the top centre of the net. While the most important goal of the season had been Wx's goal against Kebun Baru United as he executed an impressive half volley into the top corner that took the wind out of KBU.

Ah Liang had a magnificent season. He has kept his motivation and been ultra-consistent all through the campaign and his contribution to winning the title has been gigantic with several saves that kept the team in the game.

Although quiet on the pitch, Captain Boon was a major contributing factor to ESFC's success in the league as he embarked on a double-double figures in both the assist and scoring charts. He is the unanimous choice for MVP.

Nathan, Yenhao and Sebas were equally impressive as they scored the many crucial goals to prove to the opponents that when ’no-way back’ really meant no-way back. However, it is important to note that for the first time, goals were aplenty across all departments and that was part of the reason why ESFC managed to secure 48 goals in the league - one of the highest in ESPZEN. In fact, the number of goals could have been higher if the two games against Team EVO were not walkovers.

Jason Ang had been a terrific ‘metronome with an engine’ in front of the back four as he performed admirably for the team in pinging those neat passes through tight angles and picking out players aerially and from range. He is, indeed, the person that makes the team tick.

The personification of the old managerial adage that strikers win you matches, defenders win you titles. All the defenders of ESFC were fantastic and only 9 goals managed to leak through. However, Ethan's performance against Rowdees FC was the finest by a centre-back we’ve ever seen as he led the entire back line with vigor, intelligence and an uncanny intuition.

That’s the story of the season in changes. And, depending on your perspective, the beauty or the horror of the thing is that it’s all starting over again. Hopefully more focused, less dramatic, and, in the end, that it’ll lead to us having something to celebrate.

Thanks once again for holding a testimonial and BBQ in my honor! Truly an honor, I must honestly say. Leaving a team never felt so awesome (because of today) and excruciating at the same time.

I really appreciate all your time, efforts, hospitality (sorry about the bush, Darren) and goal-scoring chances (penalty to complete the hat trick, Wei Lin). May we continue to hang out, supper, drink (alcoholic beverages, Boon), play and jeer teams that aren't Man Utd, Barcelona or Everyday Sunday together!

Champions of DIV 11

Although there was little fanfare or rather another absence of opposition from the final match, there was a sense of jubilation in the team as ESFC was crowned champions for only the second time in their short history. The journey was not a smooth one, as in most things in life, but time and time again, the team has proven that when the going gets tough, we can turn things around and often when we least expect.

This victory lifted the gloom which the team has faced recently. Although it must be said the last time feelings were running so low at the team was quite some a while ago and we can only hope that the team will have had more enthusiasm and energy for the coming season.

ESFC took the opportunity from the absence of Team EVO FC in the penultimate match of the season to have a 7-a-side training and bonding session. Indeed, the session brought the team closer together as the players were led by Captain Boon and Ethan who were inspired by Qiuli in the exhilarating Sg-Msia match the night before.

We're at the final stretch of the season against the same opponent in the last two games. Let's not slip up now.

Team Evo FC has a featured player on Footballopod but this is normally written and sent by the team itself. So it doesn't mean anything. We still have to play our game and I have some tactical pointers to make here.

I think we need to learn to play in a compact manner meaning the gap between our line of strikers, midfielders and defenders should be minimized. There were instances in our previous games whereby the gaps were so wide that you could fill Titanic(slightly exaggerating) in.

Secondly, I feel that at times we can press high and reap the benefits. But the key here is to do it as a team. The ENTIRE team must do it together. If not, it will lead to the first point that I mentioned above.

I know we tend to be frustrated when things do not go our way - especially myself - but we need to communicate our intentions to the rest of the team. As Boon says, "What's said on the pitch, stay on the pitch." If you have a valid reason and its communicated properly to the rest, then I'm sure everyone will support.

Finally, there are some things that I wish to clarify.

Our objective. It has always been asked and wondered. What is our team's objective? We started out as a group of like-minded friends who just wanted to cure our addiction for a dose of football together. It still is. We're still addicted. However, things gets a little bit complicated and we want to win. And this meant that our objective became slightly skewed. For some, winning and losing do not matter. For others, they're here to win. Here, our objective became blurred. What I can say is that most games are already lost, not won. We're in it as friends and it is important to enjoy the game. Winning is a bonus and losing means we got to try harder. Remember that we have a responsibility to one another. That is why football is a team game. Here's a quote to remember.

Hi there!

As some of you would've known by now, I'm leaving ESFC to return to Tusser. It's not about the wages that don't exist, and it's certainly nothing personal. It's just a difference in preference of sporting culture- not to say that it sucks here of course! As the adage goes, different strokes for different folks.

I'd like to thank and each and every one of you for the awesome memories we've shared on and off the pitch for what, the past 4-5 years? I've definitely left calmer, more peace-loving and richer for the experience, and you all have my sincerest gratitude for this.

I'd also like to single Kim out for pulling this incredible team back together, Sin Ting and Boon's undying commitment to handling manpower and operations all this while, and Simon for being our goalie and never complaining about it!

Good luck in everything that you set yourself out to do or whatever fate hurls at you in this adventure called life, and most importantly, enjoy it to the fullest! We all live only once.

ESFC 5 - 2 Rowdees FC

ESFC mounted an impressive comeback despite going down by 2 goals in the first 15 minutes. A switch of personnel and change of formation brought some much-needed stability to the team that was slow off the block once again. This coincided with a sudden injection of urgency and high pressing into ESFC’s game.

Quick interchanging plays between the midfielders and strikers enacted more pressure for the opponents and a quick succession of 3 goals were scored before the end of the first half. A pin-point corner from Boon found Long lurking in the far post and his thumping header ascended ESFC's confidence level.

ESFC dominated the remaining first half, playing with more swagger, aggression and invention than they had done in the previous 15 minutes. A cross was curled in delicately by the right foot of teleporter-Weilin and Sebas was at the end of it, glancing ESFC into an encouraging tie game. But that was not the end of it as another laser-guided cross-cum-shot from Jason Ang ~~found Long lurking in the near post this time and the latter scored his 2nd of the game with another thumping header~~ was deflected into the net by the goalie.

Second half saw the introduction of Nathan who worked his socks off to pressure the defense and was rewarded with a fine goal. Boon scored the final goal of the game after some impressive overlapping runs and one-twos between Weilin and Sebas.

Credits to Long for scoring ~~two~~ one fine header but the same must be mentioned for those who provided the supply. Moments of such quality deserve to win games, but had Rowdees FC taken their chances, there’s no doubt they would have easily won this game.

ESFC 4 - 0 Rowdees FC

ESFC maintained its winning form under the Sunday sky and the blistering afternoon heat. The team started without the influential Boon who opted to start from the bench and this would later proved to be a genius tactical decision.

Started in the heart of defence was Zhong Terry, back from his expedition around the world that would have put Gulliver to shame and Ethanrazzi which had just minutes before the start admitted to his unusual fetish for animal porn.

The afternoon heat took its toll on the boys as ESFC took close to 20 minutes to get its engine started as on form striker Nathan failed to add to his impressive tally. As the saying goes, the making of a good team is when you grind out results even when you are not playing well and this seems to be the perfect epitome of ESFC. Indeed, a pin-point bullet throw-in by St set up mercurial Yenhao to volley in off the crossbar for the first goal of the game.

2nd half started with a much more composed ESFC with Captain Boon and Chest-bursting Wx coming on and adding more bite to the already lethal ESFC attack. Unfortunately, Zhong was caught out by the opponent while attempting a pass to Zifu and was sent off for what seems like a dubious decision. After some reshuffling with Long deputizing at center back, the opponents bombarded the ESFC goal like a B-52 bomber but the makeshift centre-halves pairing of Long and Zifu, coupled with the ever-brilliant Van Der Simon repelled everything that came their way and more importantly, the goalie made a couple of fantastic saves from point blank range.

When it seems like the game is going to finish 1-0, Boon stood up to the pressure with extraordinary grace by scoring from an assist from Yenhao against the run of play to make it 2 – 0. This proved to be crucial as the goal took the wind out of the sails of Rowdees FC and the floodgates opened after that.

In another counter-attacking move, Boon did a solo run down the flanks from a pass from Kim to clinically tap in his 2nd of the game and ESFC’s third. Makeshift left-back ST - covering for Eugene who was sick and Darren who wanted to be a spectator in the 2nd half - made some outstanding overlapping runs and one of it provided a goal as Boon made a reverse pass that split the defense wide-open. Unfortunately, ST's shot hit the pole but it rebounded for Yenhao to tap in for the 4th goal which concluded the Fruitful Sunday of ESFC.

There were many players such as Jason Ang, Long, Yenhao, Ethan and Simon who played well today but special mention and the MOTM must be given to Boon who provided the side with two crucial goals to turn the tide. Ethanrazzi must also be commended for being ever so brave and reliable in defense and in admitting to his secret fetishes.

ESFC 5 - 0 Next Team FC

Despite making the traditional slow start, ESFC was only revving its engine and soon showed the opponents why they are sitting on top of the Div 11 by creating a string of chances. Nathan smashed ESFC into another win with a clinical brace as ESFC eased past Next Team FC. The No. 10 striker produced a moment of magic on the 5th minute with a tremendous finish with his right foot from just inside the box and with his 7th goal coming via a tap-in after Next Team FC failed to clear the delicious-looking ball - set up for a tap-in - by in form winger Guoxing. Wx added the 3rd after some neat touches before the end of the first half which was only 15 minutes as the referee was late for the game. Adib scored the 4th as he raced in front of the defenders to score from a brilliant low cross by Boon during the start of the 2nd half.

The game also witnessed the return of Kim as he marked his comeback by scoring his first goal of the tournament after another brilliant cut-back from Guoxing. The striker celebrated by dedicating his goal to his teammates who have been extremely supportive throughout his injury ordeal.

The battle for the championship between ESFC and Kebun Baru United look set to go down to the wire as both sides never seem to drop points and this proves to be exciting times ahead for both teams.

10 Men ESFC Hits a double Hattrick

Having been chided for fielding 7 defensive players for the match by one of its own players, ESFC made the player eat his words as it scored an emphatic 6-1 win over a spirited Team Saintsational FC.

Having scored a scruffy first goal, which was headed onto the crossbar by ST before falling to the head of Yenhao who lob headed the ball over the keeper and into the net, the second was simply said, a stunner.

The finish was ala Dejan Stankovic, albeit with much more aplomb. Having controlled the cleared ball just past the halfway line, Adib unleashed a sublime half volley which went over the keeper's flailing hands and into the top centre of the net. Simply delicious!

With the score at 2 nil at half time and playing with 10 men, although 11.5 men might be more apt since one TYH = 2.5 TYH(the other 0.5 would have been given if only he could cross from the byline and head the ball into the net himself), ESFC, as per usual, slept for the first five minutes of the second half and was duly punished by Team Saintsational.

However, a spirited fightback ensued with MOTM TBH receiving a layoff from 2.5men TYH before pushing the ball to his left foot before unleashing a u-dare-to-save-u-save-la ball right into the middle of the goal, leaving the keeper grasping for thin air.

10 minutes later, ESFC was 4-1 up. With TBH running down the flank, Adib saw the speedy, skilful and scared-to-head-for-the-ball-cos-it-will-mess-his-hair intentions. Playing a floated through ball that put Michael Carrick to shame, TBH controlled it with his right foot before wonderfully latching the ball with his right foot from 30m out, into the top centre of the goal, leaving the goalkeeper stranded once again.A beauty(second to Dejan Stankovic)from TBH, having seen two other chances hit the crossbar and upright from open play and a direct free kick respectively.

5 minutes later, TYH silent his critics who were bombarding him with tirades for missing 3 to 4 golden opportunities in the first half by going solo before sending the ball to the near post, leaving two defenders in the lurch and the keeper, once again, helpless.

ST then completed the double hattrick by outpacing the leftback before latching on TBH's through ball to put ESFC on pole position for the second week running.

Not to be forgotten were two wonderful saves from keeper fantastic, Ah Liang, in the either side of the half to keep the opposition with only a goal to their name. A one footed save after Adib bungled a routine pass and also a tip over the bar after some good passing from the opponents signifies his importance at the heart of our defense.

Good job fellas! Let's enjoy the game like we did and life will always be bright =)

ESFC 2 - 0 Kebun Baru United

The heavy rain did nothing to dampen the team's spirits as ESFC raised their game to defeat league leaders Kebun Baru United by 2 goals to nil.

The match started off quite tentatively as both sides looked to impose themselves on the game. A combination of the sleek MJC surface and the heavy rain meant that more passes went astray than usual.

Of real significance in the first half was an audacious chip from Boon which left the keeper stranded but was unlucky to see the ball bounce back off the woodwork. The opponents also threatened with some incisive passes that ended with a volley from their striker which went just wide.

The turning point of the match was when the opposition striker received a second yellow card for his late tackle. From then on, ESFC was able to put more men forward. A corner kick from Boon ended up at Wen Xiong's feet and he executed an impressive half volley into the top corner.

Shortly after, a counterattack saw Sebastian cuttting in from the right before playing in Yenhao who converted with ease.

There was hardly any doubt that Wen Xiong was the MOTM with his tenacious play and work rate in midfield. In particular, his unique skill which resembled Blanco's "bunny hop" saw him evade several players in one play. Not to mention the wonderful goal which gave ESFC the lead.

We dedicate this win to Kim who is out injured and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Great play from the whole team and kudos to everyone who played a part in this match. Keep up the good work and attendance guys!

Sebas "Tevez sia" Seah scored a hat trick of well-taken goals today. Tenacious Nathan added a deserved double to his tally, one of which was the vital equalizer after the Sundays fell behind early in the game.

It was a good team performance overall, but fatigue and perhaps a tinge of overconfidence (barring Josh's penalty miss and freekick mess) resulted in a lackluster second half.

Long and Zifu were superb in defense; it was hard to tell this was their first time pairing up in the back (right?)! Sorry Simon about the face planter. Kekeke!

MOTM Yenhao marked his long-awaited return with the vital opening goal and cemented his claim for the prestigious award by barfing in the middle of the pitch due to overexertion. An exemplary player on both counts!

Boon put matters to rest late in the game with a well-placed finish. The Sundays' pass-and-move (or as Barcelona fans like to say, tiki-taki) were well in effect today and duly rewarded with a clean sheet and three crucial points against some tough opposition. Kudos to both sides, the excellent referee and good playing surface. Shame there was no water point though.

ESFC celebrated an emphatic victory against a valiant and spirited side with the team in red putting in a good shift on a muddy pitch (which unfortunately had no washing point to MUDdle matters).

The Sundays' improved collective movement was rewarded in both the forms of 7 well-taken goals and a coveted clean sheet.

Guo Xing, among all the other Xing Xings on the field today, was particularly outstanding with his incisive runs, passes, and solid defending.

ESFC 5 - 2 HOMEWEST UNITED FC

Amidst their busy schedule of pretending to be studying for exams, ESFC managed to outscore, outspeak, outpush and outkick Homewest United in a feisty encounter. Goals from Peng, Nathan (2), Adib and Boon ensured that the team was able to see out victory comfortably despite conceding 2 silly goals in the second half.

The match fully epitomized the spirit of the ongoing general elections, with players from both teams putting in their best efforts in an attempt to ensure victory. The highlight of the game must have been the sight of Ethan rushing to the aid of Wenxiong after he was unfairly challenged by the opponent, who interestingly is a 郝劭文 look-alike. Given the manner in which Ethan carried out his rescue mission, one cannot help but associate him with Dr. Chee Soon Juan of the SDA. Both tend to get themselves into trouble because of the tremendous passion and courage they have to stand up for their beliefs. Unlike Dr. Chee though, Ethan was fortunate to have fantastic co-drivers alongside him to pull him away from danger and to stop him from carrying out any more demolition work.

Elsewhere, the match also saw the return of all-action Adib and best left-back Darren. Although both players performed wonderfully well after such prolonged absence from the team, there are specific moments which they might not want to remember.

Playing as a striker in the first half, Adib switched to centre back in the second half. The change is so drastic that it is akin to Low Thia Khiang moving from Hougang SMC to Aljunied GRC. Adib (aka Wong Kan Seng) struggled to adapt initially and a lapse in concentration allowed Homewest United's right winger (aka Mas Selamat) a chance to break the offside trap and to tap home his side's first goal.

Darren provided a very assured defensive display after coming on in the second half. In one of his rare ventures upfield though, he put his Aussie surfing skills to good use by executing a delayed and exaggerated dive in an attempt to win a penalty. The 'foot stomping' he made after knowing that a penalty is not awarded would have made PAP's Tin Pei Ling proud. But unlike Tin Pei Ling, his greatest regret in life must have been him making the dive in the first place.

Jokes aside, ESFC played reasonably free flowing football despite the wet and muddy field conditions. The ability to bounce back from a demoralizing league defeat to win convincingly today signifies the fighting spirit possessed by the players. Let us all continue to work hard and strive to become a FIRST WORLD PARLIAMENT, or rather first position in the league.

ESFC 1 - 2 Kebun Baru United

ESFC slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against valiant Kebun Baru United, despite Peng's equalizer in the second half.

The team just didn't show up today. Not just literally, but we didn't play our usual game. Maybe we were too mesmerized by how good-looking the new jerseys were. Seriously though, let's not blame anyone, move on and look forward to the next game. Together. Negativity is lethal and contagious. Think positive, guys! :)

At the moment, Mr. Logistics here has all the remaining kits and balls (2 match worthy Mikasas and 2 futsal worthy), and will bring the 2 match balls every game. So... the verdict is out.

We're in Div 11 for the coming season and we will be facing 6 other teams (4 Chinese-based and 2 Malay-based). There is a good mix of students, NSF and people in their late 20s. This means that we will face opponents who will be fit and hungry. Basically, these teams are also 'new' to ESPZEN and hence we will not know much about their style and history too. For now, I will not delve deep into our opponents yet because my belief is that we should focus on ourselves first.

I guess people will question why are we in div 11 when we thrashed the div 10 champs(for your info, they will be in div 8 for the coming season) and were in div 4 back in 2008? Well, my answer to this will be based on the statistics provided by ESPZEN.

The verdict is that we are not as good as what we think of ourselves to be.

Based on 2 seasons and a cup game (Champions Cup 2008), we have the following:

They do not show much except we have a positive goal difference which goes to show that we're quite an attacking team.

What this shows is that we tend to score more goals in the first half than the second half. Although 24.53% of our goals were scored in the last quarter of the game, it is pertinent to note that it did not matter much. Why?

This is the reason. We conceded most goals during the last quarter. In fact, overall we conceded about 53% of our goals in the second half! This is quite a worrying trend that had stopped us from winning games.

This is also what I have observed in our last game at Tampines Secondary. We were strolling just after the hour mark and our opponents fought back with two goals. Maybe we can blame it on tiredness or a lapse in concentration but statistically, albeit it was two years ago, it is evident that something must be done to address this enduring issue.

I do not see this as a defensive problem because we have incredible players in that department. What I see is that we are not working as a team to prevent the opponents from coming back into the game. For instance, there were complaints of a huge gap between the midfield and defense which our last opponents exploited to great effect.

Here, we need people to take up the responsibility to lead the team both on and off the pitch. Sometimes, some decisions might not be to your liking but please let go of your personal ego and think of the team and the bigger picture. We will make unpopular decisions with regards to substitutions or change some players and formations that will change the dynamics of the game.

Noh Mihi Solum. This is the unspoken motto for our team and I hope everyone will fight for one another in the games because everything is, "not for myself alone." We all contribute in one way or another so make the most out of it by helping the team to win the games.

Finally, take this season as a gauge of our standards before we argue for a higher division in ESPZEN. I believe that we have the potential to be the best team in ESPZEN but the statistics and results have shown otherwise. Although some might argue those statistics are not accurate because it only shows 2 out of the 6 seasons that we have played since our inception. However, we have not really played well in the other seasons too. Furthermore, those were against "weaker" opponents. Let's do ourselves some justice in this and the coming seasons okay?

The game started in a 4-5-1 formation with Simon as the goalie; WeiLin, Zhong, Jason Chew and Eugene forming the backline; Wak, Peng, Jason Ang, Boon and St in midfield and Nathan as the lone striker. ~~Josh~~, Kim, Ethan and Long were on the bench.

Mercurial, all-action Sin Ting was on a goal-scoring mood as he brilliantly converted two chances with aplomb and style, but gifted the opposition a needless (exciting) penalty on the other end of the pitch, probably to make things more interesting for all involved. Josh attempted mind games with the taker but to no avail.

Boon's quick feet mesmerized both his marker and spectators alike as he floated past him with ease, crossing for well-positioned, predatory Nathan to add yet another goal to his tally. Provider turned scorer, Boon then finished from a precise through-ball from midfield Commando Commander Jason Ang.

Kim hit the crossbar with a looping header to the anguish of many, but his persistent dribble down the left flank that left three defenders in his wake, that led to our equalizer (despite his simultaneous calls for the ref to blow for a foul/penalty?) was truly commendable.

This match report is not in chronological order, obviously. We fought back after they drew first blood, but we scored a few nice goals before conceding a few silly ones but what's most important is the 3 poin- oh wait, it's just a friendly.

In sum, it was a good team performance, especially the consistently solid defense that seldom gets the plaudits it deserves. However, with more communication and movement, we can only and surely improve.

MOTM: Psychic Ethan, who knew the ball was going in from the free-kick he himself conceded, rushed out into illegal distance before the ball was struck, to force the opposition to retake an otherwise successful dead ball. Granted, they scored shortly after, but this was poetic (in)justice at its finest!

We are not bad players.

Granted, we don't train on a regular basis to improve our physicality or ball skills, but we're not shabby.

We watch enough futbol to know how the game works. Every weekend, we see on mio/StarHub/illegal internet channels how the pros do it. We've all played enough games to know our own strengths and weaknesses.

What ESFC lacks is immediate tactical acumen. When we're not doing things right, we should not wait till after the game to debrief.

If we're not passing or moving enough, we should remind one another immediately. If one of us spots a weakness in the opposing team, let's go for it instantly. If we're not exploiting it enough, let's communicate with one another and execute the gameplan on the spot.

But let's be firm and polite. We're more than teammates, we're friends. You guys are almost the siblings I never had.

We only play our beloved, beautiful game together once a week. In each match, there's only 90 minutes to win. And we've only a decade or two left before we hang up our boots and watch the next generation take the field.

At our age, we won't make it to the higher leagues, but let's own the social one that we're joining.

Let's have fun, gentlemen. But let's have fun playing to the best of our collective ability. From now on, let's play like a real team. Let us play better. Now.

Everyday Sunday FC were in disarray even before the match had started as the goalie left his passport at the airport and hence could not travel with the team. This meant that the team had to depend on regular outfielders Jason Chew and Zifu as the stand-in goalies.

The game started in a 4-1-4-1 formation with Jason Chew as the goalie; WeiLin, Zhong, Zifu and Eugene forming the backline; Ethan, Peng, Jason Ang, Josh and St in midfield and Nathan as the lone striker. Boon, Kim and guest player Kenneth were on the bench.

ESFC clung on and won against a spirited FC SongSang side despite going 1 nil down by the 10th minute. The defense and goalkeeper could be faulted for the strike, but the attacker has to be acclaimed with a magnificent lob that caught the stand-in goalie off guard.

This became a wake-up call to ESFC as they had plenty of possession but turned too little of it into clear-cut chances as the attackers missed a string of clear goal scoring opportunities. Luck was on ESFC's side when Josh intercepted a poor back-pass and leveled the scoreline. Sensing a change in fortunes, Kim and Boon were brought in midway in the first half with the system changing to 4-4-2. Immediately, Boon made an impact with his shot hitting the upright and landing into the path of the marauding left-back Eugene to score.

2nd-half beckoned and a brilliant cross from St was half-cleared by the opponents into the path of Boon, with his back to goal, to smash into the top corner. Kim provided fuel for his advocates and his detractors alike as he failed to covert the penalty that was brilliantly won by the penetrative run of Kenneth into the box.

Zifu, the 2nd half stand-in goalie, stopped a goal-bound free kick in the last kick of the game to hand ESFC a lucky victory.

MOTM: Josh. Perhaps inspired by the presence of his Baby G, the cultured player proved to be ever reliable in both the fullback and left-mid positions. His goal was because of his dogged persistence and perhaps he had some.... before the game. :)

Verdict: ESFC's performance was not one to savour but the result was. Such praise as they attract is normally grudging, but their spirit has to be admired. In many respects, they did not deserve anything, yet they still contrived to salvage a win.

"A game of two halves" may be a well-worn footballing cliché but it could be applied with some accuracy to Sunday's game at Serangoon Stadium.

The game started in a 4-4-2 formation with Simon as the goalie; WeiLin, Zhong, Jason Chew and Josh forming the backline; Wx, Peng, Yenhao and Boon in midfield and powerful strike force of Nathan and Adib who just returned from a broken arm. Zifu, Eugene, Jason Ang, Ragen and Kim were on the bench.

Everyday Sunday FC took the opportunity to test out a new system with the towering presence of the two power forwards causing some panic to the opponents' defense whenever ESFC took the route one approach. It brought the first goal when Nathan flicked the ball into the path of Yenhao to score his first goal of the 2011. Yenhao was on the end of a free kick from Wx to score with a superb header. A brilliant overlapping run from WeiLin that was spotted by Wx brought the last goal as the marauding fullback sent a brilliant cross into the box which was finished by Nathan.

ESFC were 3 nil up by the 30th minute and the opponents got frustrated and started to play aggressively with a few of the blatant fouls gone unnoticed and unpunished by the referee.

The game restarted in the second half with ESFC choosing to take the "save-ourselves" approach and thus the opponents took control of the game with their players having more time on the ball. Ultimately, they could not break through the resolute defense led by the impressive Zhong.

MOTM: Yenhao. Although he played 45 minutes only, it was enough to showcase his quality and ever importance to the team. Two chances, two goals. Enough said.

Verdict: To quote WeiLin: "...First half division 1, Second half division 10." This is a seeding match arranged by ESPZEN and the opponents are the champions of division 10. Although we have shown that we are leagues apart from this team, it is important to note that this is also an important game. We must continue to fight for every ball and not take the safety approach as the dynamics of the game could change and we were lucky that they did not score. Probably, scoring a few more goals in the second half to extinguish their fighting spirit would be a better approach.

Everyday Sunday FC dole out an absolute thrashing to the opponents as a much-changed side from last week tore a disheveled Blues apart. This was a display of attacking brilliance, surging forward with invention and energy, creating and taking their chances.

The game started in a 4-1-4-1 formation with Simon as the goalie; WeiLin, Zhong, Zi Fu and Josh forming the backline; St, Jason Ang, Peng and Boon in midfield with Ethan playing the destroyer role and Kim playing the lone striker. Yenhao, Nathan and Wak were on the bench. Midway through the game, the team switched to 4-4-2 with Yenhao and Nathan as the strike force.

A team that seemed stuck a week ago has begun to move once again, albeit slowly and even though it was against a weaker opposition. The win put an end to a 2 games losing streak and special praise should also be given to the defense for keeping a clean sheet.

WeiLin married trickery with a goal-scoring precision, veering in from the right flank to wreak havoc as he scored what is probably the best goal of the game. Slick combination play by the central midfielders enabled them to free Boon as he cut his crosses back for Kim and St to roll in the low shots. Wak made a rare foray into the opponent's penalty box in his favorite Dani Alves style and pulled the trigger with an emphatic strike. Boon got four assists from his crosses and was involved with most of the attacking plays.

MOTM: ~~Kim~~ Boon. For ~~scoring~~ assisting the four goals AND scoring one.

New Signing: ESFC is pleased to announce the signing of Zifu who is a defender and who can play across the defense. He seemed to fit right in at the back with a couple of great tackles. He will take the vacated no. 19 that was previously donned by the greatest left back. Can Zifu step up to his predecessor's standards?

Verdict: ESFC provided a statement of intent from the start but this is still the pre-season and there are still many things the team can improve on. To quote Wak: "...just take the performance with a pinch of salt, but sugar coated with acai berries."

The anticipated return of Everyday Sunday FC on the football pitch on a hot and sunny afternoon brought both a sense of dread and relief to the team. After a 7 months hiatus, only 11 players turned up for the friendly against Y Homeless FC given that it is still a CNY weekend.

The game started with in a 4-4-2 formation with Simon as the goalie; WeiLin, Jason Chew, Wak and Hanting forming the backline; St, Jason Ang, Wx and Eugene in midfield; a strike force of Ragen and Kim.

With the lack of subs and the inherent tendency to play fast and furious, ESFC faded off after a bright start with great inter-change of play and goal scoring opportunities. In the end, the opponents counter-attacked successfully twice with sublime finishing from their star striker.

The second half started brightly for ESFC again with Wx taking a pass from Kim to score from 25 yards which left their goalie stranded. However, the opponents scored 3 goals in quick succession to bring an end to the game.

MOTM: Wx. For a great finish and overall control of the midfield with a few great attacking runs into the box.

Guys, considering that we have not played together for 7 months and its still a CNY holiday. Take it with a pinch of salt with regards to today's scoreline and attendance. We did well today in terms of the attacking plays and probably everyone was too eager to fightback and a lack of match fitness led to a neglect of some defensive duties.

We will do well when we play more games which I will definitely be arranging...

On a side note, we are on a two games losing streak. 6-0 and 5-1. Let's tighten up the back first shall we? a La Mourinho~

NUS Arts Open 2010

Everyday Sunday FC returned to action on a lovely Saturday morning in a 6v6 Street Soccer Challenge despite experiencing some last minute withdrawals.

The team saw the return of defensive genius and former Captain, Ethan Loo, who had received 6 cards only in his last 3 games for the team. Zhong, Adib, Sinting, Jason Ang, Eugene and Ragen formed the rest of the side with the recovering Kim performing his new role as the water-boy.

The Spice-boyz secured 2 wins and 3 draws in the group stage to advance as the group winner for the knock-out rounds with Ragen and Adib having a brace each.

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, the waterboy had to stand-in as the goalie in the knock-out rounds which prompted a full investigation and condemnation by the waterboy's club manager.

ESFC went through to its first ever Finals due to a match-winning goal from Eugene. However, the team fell short of achieving its aim of winning the competition despite fighting back from a goal down with a superb first time effort from Zhong-extraordinaire.

The competition's MVP award went to Ethan as he dominated the game with both his physical and mental presence that even got the Referee shitting in his pants.

The waterboy will like to thank the participants for representing "Team Kim Yuan" (that's our name in the competition!) and hopes to be back on the pitch with you guys soon.

Hello there!

It's been a while; too long in fact. Just a lil update on the current situation, for ~~all those~~ Darren who's living abroad especially. Haha! As you all should know by now, Kim- the sole administrator of the team- recently underwent major knee surgery. I cannot speak from firsthand experience, but I can only imagine it to be a living nightmare for any one who has the passion and desire to play football.

Please understand that while credit can be attributed to an individual, our team's state of vegetation cannot be imputed to just one person. I'm sure all of us know in our hearts that this isn't the end of ESFC, for love never truly dies- but rather, just a cordial split before circumstances are in our collective favour once again. With that... Weilin, stadio on a good day for all leh! Hehehe. And also, for your viewing and laughing pleasure:

The men of ESFC never got their groove going when they were dealt with a deserved 2-0 loss at the hands of the homeless. Bolstered by a strong rearguard and with the return of goal poacher Nathan, ESFC surely had a strong upper hand/leg; well, at least on paper.

Homeless drew first blood after a swift attack against the run of play, in a half almost dominated by the tripartite midfield nexus comprising of Adiaby, Wakuso and Pengiesta. Chances were at a premium, with Adiaby spurning several shots off target and with Nathan alone upfront and deprived of quality service, except for a skewed shot when he was put through by magnificent wingplay by machoman Sinting. Pressure mounted during the 2nd half for ESFC to get back that crucial equaliser, with perennial emoman Boon leading the charge. On numerous occasions, centrehalf hardgayman Chew was guilty of several openings despite his nifty first touches. But again, cracks begin to unfold in the ESFC defense in chasing that one goal, with the homeless boys putting the nail in the coffin with a headed goal from a corner.

Alas, all's well despite the scoreline, when lungbusting Weilin realised it was actually useful to consider not to rush in from nowhere to head the ball, lest he be reminded of the baluku (??) on his eyebrow courtesy of the ironhead Wakuso, when Kim Hargreaves reminisced the times he played against the red/blue tide of ESFC and shuddering in fear of the chopstick tackle that made him tumble, and especially when ESFC managed to feast their eyes on an exquisite display of women's football, signs of real gender equality...

Hold on to your balls fellas... we are ultimately still a good footballing side. =)

It is with great sadness that I am accepting your email.

We have tried to make this league as flexible as possible; we even allowed your team a break during the exams.

And for teams that have trouble paying up, we have made it easier for them to manage it by splitting payment into two instalments.

We wanted to create a friendly atmosphere, hence a team that was deemed to be a problem was booted out. And we still promised that all teams would play 11 games.

We also want to help the less fortunate. Hence, you will see field marshals at every game in the league.(Something we didn't really have last year for all games.)

As for the pitches, you cannot say that the quality of pitches are bad - the artificial ones are OK.
The events were beyond our control.

Sports Council made a big blunder that affected our league on a smaller scale, and EZPEN on a larger one!

As for the quality of opponents, yes, I agree that your team (and my Frankel team) may be too strong for this league. It's best you try some other leagues.

The (below par) quality of refereeing -is, to me, debatable.

The money that is paid goes into many things like the booking of the function room, food, souvenirs, medals, guest speaker (this year),(we do not have sponsors).
It is not just for the games per se.

This is a not for profit league, but we do have to show that we do break even.

Anyway, I hope that you and your team do find a good league to play in.

Withdrawal from the Sporting Light Football League 2010

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm the administrator of Everyday Sunday FC (ESFC). I am writing in to officially tender our withdrawal from the Sporting Light Football League 2010 with immediate effect after the Week 11 game against Bank Of America. The pull-out of Team Momentos from the Week 10 game proves to be the last straw in making a unanimous decision from ESFC.

The members of ESFC have voted to withdraw from the league due to the following reasons:

1. Quality of pitch
2. Quality of opponents
3. Quality of refereeing

Certainly, many things have changed since the inauguration of the first Sporting Light Football League in 2009 but expectations have to be maintained or improved. We were promised many things but given very little.

Furthermore, for the amount that we are paying which is equivalent to better-managed leagues such as ESPZEN and D2D, the experience has not been value-added. We agreed to pay an extra S$200.00 this season to help the unfortunate ones such as Seng Kiat who has struck a good friendship with some of our members. But we did not expect the cost per match to be increased to approximately S$140.00. In comparison, a friendly game on Yishun Pitch would normally cost S$80.00. As such, since we have paid S$700.00 for the first half of the season and we would be playing the 7th game by Week 11, I believe there would not be any outstanding payment left.

Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your time, and wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Enjoy the impending World Cup fever!

ESFC capitulated and slumped to an abysmal defeat by the SGX-Men, losing their debutant keeper Josh in the opening moments of the second half to a Barthezish move that even the eccentric Frenchman himself would be proud of. Deputy keeper Figo almost saved the resulting penalty but to no avail. A series of atypical errors, and a typical 'dead and dull' game cost the Sundays the match and ultimately, all three points of the dreary day. Take nothing away from the valiant SGX-Men though, they wanted the ball and the victory more than us today. Let's hope Wigan and Manchester United have the same burning desire!

PS: On a more important note, let's welcome Mr Chong "Figo" Wenxiong and 2LT (Mr on Monday) Jason "Edison" Ang back to civilization! Also, Darren "Ticklemaster" Sin has moved to a condo near Parkway Parade, so east-siders beware!

Nathansi continues his record breaking spree, scoring yet another hat trick. Not one, not two, not four, not a million, but three goals. The number 13's astonishing goal tally of 10 goals in 4 matches remains unsurpassed; he has already achieved a hat trick of hat tricks in the first four games of the season. Who's to say he won't go on to score 42 (or more) like Ronaldo? Stay tuned.

Boonlahor added another to his collection of goals with a shout (literally); Sin Ting burnt his markers, the astro turf and the keeper's gloves with his blistering pace and a thunderbolt of a shot, before Kim broke his ~~fuck~~ duck in heroic fashion as he converted an accurate Wenxiong cross, stabbing past the hapless keeper before wheeling away in solitary celebration hehehe. Well done lads!

Credit to Simon who also made several brilliant saves to earn yet another coveted clean sheet for the solid defence, well-marshalled by Waksherano. Watch out for the latter's crunching tackles and perhaps more remarkably, a rare grin! :D

I hope that you have noticed out of the 5 matches, 3 of em' took (are taking) place at Yishun Ring Road and even if we have an opportunity to play on astroturf pitches, Bedok Green Secondary does not really pass off as a good pitch because of its size. It is quite frustrating to always play at Yishun Ring Road because of the condition of the pitch though some may agree that its not as bad as before. But then again, why must we play on a pitch that normally costs $80 if we used it for friendly games? Furthermore, prior to joining this competition, the organizers have promised that we would play on one of the top pitches in Singapore such as Temasek Sec, Meridian JC, First TPY Sec and etc.

On top of all this, the quality of our opponents is clearly not the level that we would like to play against. For the 3 matches played so far, these opponents are basically little boys who are of a much lower level than us. How long must we carry on playing sub-standard opponents? Right now, we are at the peak (for some, already starting to decline) condition of our sad footballing lives and I feel that we should be playing against quality opponents which will test the mettle of our team. Winning is part of enjoyment but winning with style and substance, not against a group of small boys who look like they just started out, is another different level of satisfaction.

I know that for some, this is just a sort of weekend football activity that provides an avenue of escape and hence would not like to be so competitive but I always believe that we should make the most of our short span of time on the football pitch and achieve something like how we did in our first Espzen season. I cannot describe those feelings well but when we won against East Coast FC, i felt a sense of accomplishment and really proud of our team. We really played as a team and our beloved ex-captain Ethan even managed to steer clear of the occasional Red Card.

In sum, with the few pointers that I have mentioned above, please take a vote and decide whether we should stay on in this league or quit mid-way and move on to another league which is more competitive and more value-added in terms of the pitch. I would even love to get back to Espzen, provided everyone stays fully committed behind the cause for a few more years before we can say farewell to football.

You may not share the opinion as I do but please take a serious consideration to what I have mentioned.

Disclaimer: I do not look down on our opponents but they are really at a different level as us and I'm sure some of u share the same sentiment as me. I'm not boasting the ability of our team but in fact I'm envious that nowadays, younger boys have the opportunity to be exposed to the rough terrain of amateur football, unlike, my time where everything just stayed within the school compound. More exposure means further strengthening of quality and this theory also fits into our team.

ESFC 7 - Frolics 1

How unfortunate for Frolics to succumb to a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of ESFC, in a performance almost in similar fashion to the fortunate 7-1 drubbing of the villains by team Chelski the night before.

In a game littered with defensive mishaps and 'even-my-grandma-can-score'(EMGCS) sitters, Frolics drew first blood when a defensive mishap between a surprisingly depressed Wak and Lionel resulted in an early goal.

But, ESFC finally prevailed, with midfield emokia Boon snatching a handsome hattrick. And even more handsome Sinting also got his season going with a handful of strikes, despite missing a couple(perhaps more?) of EMGCS sitters. Not to mention Nathan's predatory instincts while latching onto the end of Figo's cross, which means he has now scored in every match this season. Lastly, Waki Alves sought a moment of redemption by scoring a scorcher of a freekick ala boon.

Surely, this will set the tone for the rest of the season, with the welcoming return of midfield anchorman Jason Ang sure to boost the play of the team and proving that the losses of the much maligned Kim Hargreaves to injury, Josh to the sharks at sea and Chew at the hands of the benchwarmers in Changi Village, were not sorely missed by the team.

Kudos to the team and a quick recovery to Kim!

ESFC 6 - 0 T.O.H

Nathan got himself on the score sheet yet again. And again. And again. Superlatives have all but ran out for this incredible goal-getter who continues to break records, accomplishing the amazing feat of consecutive hat-tricks in two back-to-back games. Here's to his third! (?!)

Ragen got onto the end of a brilliant cross after some impressive footwork by Sinting on the byline, slotting it past the keeper at his near post with typical aplomb. Boon also scored a stunning freekick which left the hapless keeper no chance as the ferocious shot dipped just beneath the crossbar into the side netting. Wenxiong opened his scoring account for the season as his tenacity paid off, smashing the ball past the opposition goalie as the ball rebounded off the latter.

The imperial defence comprising rocksteady Simon, Eugenevra, Jason Chew-your-face, Waksherano, Han "speedy slidey" Ting and Guan ~~Jun Zi~~ Long were resolute individually and collectively, repelling all of the valiant T.O.H's attacks, deservedly earning a clean sheet. HOOHA!

ESFC 4 - 1 MSC

Nathan proved time and time and time (that's a hat trick for you) again why he prefers playing up front instead of between his own posts. His calm composure, assertive finishing and tactical positioning allowed him to put three goals past the hapless opposition keeper. Ragen was a constant thorn as well, using his excellent control and turning to execute several attacking moves.

Boon, Zhong and Figo put in a virtuoso performance in the middle of the park. Their superb range of passing, control, movement and tackling enabled the mercurial winger SprinTing to rampage down the flanks at an blink of an eye. Or two.

The defence was calm and decisive; clearing apparent dangers and spreading the play whenever the MSC attackers threatened to close the latter down. Keeper Simon, Wak, Jason, Wei Lin and Eugenevra were imperious and cohesive as a unit; unfortunately, a lapse in concentration caused the valiant MSC strikers to pull one back just before the break.

Firebrand Josh was substituted onto the pitch in the second half before winning a freekick, ~~fluking~~ scoring it fortuitously, before somehow earning a yellow card and fluking yet another chance as Figo dispatched a perfectly weighted pass down the middle into his path. Kim, who was constantly hacked down throughout, was unfortunate not to get onto the scoresheet as his efforts bounced agonizingly off the crossbar and keeper, respectively.

As Jay-Z would say... On to the next one.

Old Victorians Assoc hands ESFC a lesson

Everyday Sunday FC slumped to a 2 - 0 defeat against a spirited and skillful Old Victorians Assoc (OVA) team. ESFC were keen to prove that they can rub shoulders with top teams and this encounter was a good opportunity to test themselves against one.

Both sides started with an identical formation (4-5-1) and this proves pivotal in the match as the midfield battle would decide the outcome of the match. Right from the start, ESFC failed to assert themselves against OVA's midfield and OVA dominated the entire game. ESFC showed some instances to fight back but at the end of the day, 2 goals in quick succession punctured the hearts of ESFC.

Lady luck was always on ESFC's side usually, but as the new season prevails it seems like Lady Luck is still on the "holiday mood" as Zhong and St missed chances that would normally go in.

Nevertheless, the match has showed that ESFC has much to learn and if they want to improve, they must be prepared to come out fighting against stronger and proper teams.

Everyday Sunday FC 8 vs 0 Anderson Junior College

ESFC put in a decent performance to emerge as 8 - 0 victors in the friendly match against Anderson Junior College, with both sides playing their first game of the year. Against a physically under-strength but much younger opponents, ESFC managed to put in 4 goals per half.

In a game where rustiness and a lack of fluidity was evident, ESFC struggled to string passes together and only managed to score after some lapses of concentration from the opponents. Much has been said about the need to control possession and adopt a patient approach in the play but time and time again, the team failed to do so. Star defender, Jason Chew Teck Kan believes every player has to remember the team instructions and also remind the others to do so if they forgot.

He said: "There will be numerous games where it will be tough and we cannot rush things and lose possession. Without possession, we cannot play beautiful football. We have to make good use of the ball and keep probing for gaps between our opponents' back line."

For now though, ESFC will go on a week's break over the Lunar New Year weekend this week, before returning to friendly action against a top opponent in the form of.....
